There seems to be some confusion over the history of art deco.
It is believed that the Exposition des arts decoratifs et industriels modernes (The international exposition of modern industrial and decorative arts) held in Paris in 1925 heralded the beginning of the art deco period.
Others believe that the discovery of TutanKhamun’s tomb in 1922 was the beginning of the art deco period. This was due to the tomb using bold colours and shapes as seen in the art deco style.
Another belief is art deco was first produced in 1910, at this time it was only produced by a few factories in Europe and was not in mainstream distribution.

No matter which story is truly correct it was the international exhibition held in Paris in 1925 which brought art deco into the public eye.

Art deco is a mixture of several major movements of the 20th century, these include Cubism, Art Nouveau, Modernism, Futurism, Constructivism and Neoclassical.

This is what makes art deco so unique, the contrast of colours and shapes.
This is the basic concept of Art deco antiques, light against dark and geometrical shapes against serpentine like swirls.

By the late 20’s everything we used was designed in the art deco style. By the early 30’s art deco had also swept America and Hollywood, the elegance attached to the style was used in many film sets of the time. We now associate these films with the term film noir.

The art deco movement was soon picked up by architects and used widely. As these architects were commissioned by countries around the world more and more buildings were erected in the art deco style.

Even the golden gate bridge had art deco influence.
Cities as far as India, Manilla and New Zealand all had buildings erected using the art deco style. Even the Queen Mary ocean liner was built using the art deco style.

The growth in Art deco antiques was partly due to womens rights been granted.
Women had campaigned for rights since before the first world war began in 1914. As the majority of men were fighting in the war women finally got the chance to get out of the house and work in the factories. The war ended in 1918 but some women remained in the factories to supplement family income, this gave them the extra income they needed to incorporate the art deco style.

The beginning of the recession in the early 30’s saw women moved out of the workplace and back in to the home. It was seen they were taking mens jobs and as the finances dropped so did the ability to afford luxuries.
The real demise of the art deco period came as the second world war began in 1939. One of the wartime rules was that only plain white pottery was to be used.
By the end of the war in 1945 art deco had gone out of fashion and was replaced by more modernistic designs.

Some people say that art deco never went out of fashion as it was still being produced and sold in top stores like Harrods, it did not have the following it had.
In 1960 art deco made somewhat of a comeback and it was actually in the sixties that the term art deco came about with the release of Bevis Hilliers book entitled
“Art Deco of the 20s and 30s” in 1968.

The real resurgence of art deco came in the 80’s, a sudden love of film noir brought back the elegance of art deco. This resurgence led to an increase in price of original art deco pieces, soon television began producing antique shows which further increased the art deco style especially the pottery pieces of Clarice Cliff which begun to have a huge following.

Are you a partygoer? Than think for a moment about what you like about those night clubs? Is this the atmosphere, the music, the people? I guess the answer is too evident – this is the mixture of everything: music, atmosphere, your mood and, of course, lighting. In most cases, people prefer those clubs where lighting is well chosen. According to the collected data, people do not usually remember the interior, but the lighting is among the top three things that stay in their memory. The majority of disco bar owners know this fact and use it to their advantage.

Beyond doubt night clubs frequently use wild, fashionable lighting and special effects, such as flashing lights of many colors, moving light beams, and smoke machines. A disco ball is an important feature of nightclub lighting. A disco ball is a rotating football-sized spheroid hung from the ceiling, covered with numerous small flat light-reflectors, with a light beam aimed at it. The most fascinating thing is that light reflections produce a large number of moving light spots on the floor and on people.

Another thing that usually attracts visitors to nightclubs is foam parties. Some nightclubs arrange foam parties where a dance floor is filled with soap lather that may not be too slippery. Competently arranged lighting makes such party erotic and unforgettable.

Also there can be used modern stage lighting which is a versatile tool in production of opera, dance, theater, and other presentation arts. Numerous kinds of stage lighting devices are used to highlight stage effects, provide dramatic background scenes and so on. Nightclubs can adopt some of these light effects to create the right kind of ambience needed for it. Imagine a stage in a disco bar where beautiful girls dance cancan in flamboyant lights, or go-go’s dance to soft rock in neon. Indeed, there are some general principles for lighting a stage, but no rigid rules can be applied in order to allow creative special effects for a night club. Some of these principles are illumination, focus, mood, revelation of form, projection elements, location and time, selective visibility, and plot. Last but not least, illumination means ability to see what is going on stage. Any illumination plan will be failing if an audience has to strain to see characters, unless this is a clear intention. Revelation of form means changing the perception of shapes onstage, mostly three-dimensional stage elements. Focus denotes directing the audience’s concentration to an area of a stage, or distracting them from another. Mood means the tone of a view or environment. For example, harsh red light has a completely different effect than soft orange colors and types of lights can help achieve a desired effect of depicting almost anything, such as époque. For instance, blues usually denote nighttime while orange and red can imply a sunrise or sunset. Lighting may also be used to project a specific view, or to act as scenery onstage. Yet, lighting a night club makes it special.

It is obvious that when you take a closer look at this issue that with all the research and study in LED technology it was only a matter of time until it truly found its way into our lives and especially into the DJ & Disco market. To the best of our knowledge, recent developments in this field led to the production of highly economical and not expensive LED DJ & disco lights, in its turn making them much more accessible to small venues, mobile users and even now home use etc. Without regard to, as far as this issue is concerned, it is vital to note that this does not mean that it is cheap, far from it in fact. So far as is known, these effects lights use clusters of high power LEDs to deliver bright, clear and vibrant projections capable of standing up to any of their standard halogen rivals. It is important to note that the optical lens on them is designed to deliver maximum light output and clarity delivering the original style light projections perfectly.

As far as my personal experience can be taken into account, I’m sure with all the buzz about LED lighting at the moment is that one barely need to go into the main benefits of the low power absorption and heat output, and, what is more important, the huge lifespan of about 100,000 hours, however it can’t hurt to remind everyone of them. Undoubtedly you have to pay serious attention to the fact that it is quite incomplex to see how these could change disco and DJ lighting for the better, no more lamps blowing during shows, being able to leave lights operating for long periods safely and, what is more important, not to mention the money saved because of the low power consumption! You should also know that the main range of lights includes among the others also moonflowers, and scanning moonflowers, but also goes as far as DMX controlled projectors and strobing LED projectors ranging from 4 to channels of control. One of the central hints for you to know is that the best thing about this is still that the prices remain actually reasonable across the entire range, a huge portion of which can be easily observed in any shop, including web shops as well.

As a matter of fact, we have every reason to believe that maybe not right now, but definitely in the future its plain to see that LED technology will be creeping into more areas much more accessible to us all, but, it is important to note that this is clearly a step in the right direction for all the mobile discos and DJ’s out there!

THE THING AT NOLAN – mosthauntedlive net

Near the south of where the road between Leesville and Hardy, in the State of Missouri, crosses the east fork of May Creek stands an derelict residence.

Nobody has lived in it since the summer of 1879, and it is speedily going to pieces. For some three years before the date mentioned above, it was occupied by the family of Charles May, from one of whose ancestors the creek near which it stands took its name.

Mr. May’s relatives consisted of a wife, an mature son and two young girls.

The son’s name was John–the names of the daughters are
nameless to the writer of this sketch.

John May was of a morose and surly disposition, not effortlessly moved to anger, but having an uncommon gift of sullen, implacable hate.

His father was quite otherwise; of a sunny, jovial disposition, but with a quick frame of mind like a sudden flame kindled in a wisp of straw, which consumes it in a flash and is no more. He cherished no resentments, and his fury gone, was quick to make overtures for reconciliation.

He had a brother living in close proximity by who was unlike him in respect of all this, and it was a current witticism in the neighborhood that John had inherited his disposition from his uncle.

One day a misunderstanding arose between father and son, harsh words
ensued, and the father struck the son full in the face with his fist.

John gently wiped away the blood that followed the blow, fixed his eyes upon the already penitent offender and said with cold composure, “You will die for that.”

The words were overheard by two brothers named Jackson, who were approaching the gentlemen at the moment; but seeing them engaged in a argument they retired, apparently unobserved.

Charles May afterward related the unfortunate occurrence to his wife and explained that he had apologized to the son for the impulsive blow, but without avail; the young man not only rejected his overtures, but refused to withdraw his horrifying threat.

Nevertheless, there was no open rupture of relations: John repeated living with the family, and things went on very much as before.

One Sunday daylight in June, 1879, about two weeks after what has
been related, May senior left the house immediately after breakfast, taking a spade. He said he was going to make an excavation at a certain spring in a forest about a mile away, so that the cattle could obtain water. John remained in the house for some hours, variously occupied in shaving himself, writing letters and reading a newspaper. His manner was very nearly what it usually was; perhaps he was a trifle more sullen and surly.

At two o’clock he left the home. At five, he returned. For some reason not connected with any interest in his movements, and which is not now recalled, the time of his departure and that of his
arrival were noted by his mother and sisters, as was attested at his trial for murder. It was observed that his clothing was wet in
spots, as if (so the prosecution afterward pointed out) he had been removing blood-stains from it.

His way was strange, his look wild. He complained of illness, and going to his room took to his bed.

May senior did not return. Later that evening the nearby neighbors were aroused, and during that evening and the following daytime a search was prosecuted through the wood where the spring was. It resulted in slight but the discovery of both men’s footprints in the clay about the spring.

John May in the meantime had grown rapidly worse with what the local physician called brain fever, and in his delirium raved of murder, but did not say whom he conceived to have
been murdered, nor whom he imagined to have done the deed. But his threat was recalled by the brothers Jackson and he was arrested on suspicion and a deputy sheriff put in charge of him at his home.

Public opinion ran strongly against him and but for his illness he would probably have been hanged by a mob. As it was, a meeting of the neighbors was held on Tuesday and a committee appointed to watch the case and take such action at any time as circumstances might seem to warrant.

On Wednesday all was changed. From the town of Nolan, eight miles away, came a tale which put a quite different light on the matter. Nolan consisted of a school residence, a blacksmith’s store, a “store”
and a half-dozen dwellings.

The store was kept by one Henry Odell, a cousin of the elder May. On the afternoon of the Sunday of May’s
evaporation Mr. Odell and four of his neighbors, men of
credibility, were sitting in the store smoking and talking. It was a warm day; and equally the front and the back door were open. At about three o’clock Charles May, who was well known to three of them, entered at the front door and passed out at the rear. He was without hat or coat. He did not look at them, nor return their
welcome, a circumstance which did not astound, for he was evidently seriously hurt.

Above the left eyebrow was a wound–a deep gash from which the blood flowed, covering the whole left side of the face and neck and saturating his light-gray shirt. Oddly enough, the thought uppermost in the minds of all was that he had been fighting and was going to the stream directly at the back of the store, to wash himself.

Possibly there was a feeling of frailty–a backwoods etiquette which restrained them from following him to offer assistance; the court records, from which, mainly, this narrative is drawn, are soundless as to anything but the actuality. They waited for him to return, but he did not return.

Bordering the brook behind the store is a forest extending for six miles back to the Medicine Lodge Hills. As soon as it became known in the area of the missing man’s dwelling that he had been
seen in Nolan there was a marked alteration in public sentiment and feeling. The vigilance committee went out of existence without the formality of a resolution. Search along the wooded bottom lands of May Brook was stopped and virtually the entire male population of the region took to beating the bush about Nolan and in the Medicine Lodge Hills. But of the missing man no trace was found.

One of the strangest circumstances of this peculiar case is the formal indictment and trial of a man for murder of one whose body no
human being professed to have seen–one not known to be dead. We are all more or less familiar with the vagaries and eccentricities of frontier law, but this instance, it is thought, is unique.

However that may be, it is of record that on recovering from his illness John May was indicted for the slaughter of his missing father. Counsel for the defense appears not to have demurred and the case was tried on its merits. The prosecution was spiritless and perfunctory; the defense easily established–with regard to the deceased–an alibi.

If during the time in which John May must have killed Charles May, if he killed him at all, Charles May was miles away from where John May must have been, it is plain that the
deceased must have come to his death at the hands of someone else.

John May was acquitted, straight away left the country, and has never
been heard of from that day. Shortly afterward his mother and sisters removed to St. Louis. The farm having passed into the possession of a guy who owns the land adjoining, and has a dwelling of his own, the May house has ever since been vacant, and has the somber reputation of being haunted.

One day after the May family unit had left the country, some boys, playing in the woods along May Creek, found concealed under a mass of dead leaves, but somewhat exposed by the rooting of hogs, a spade, nearly new and vivid, except for a spot on one edge, which was rusted and stained with blood. The implement had the initials C. M.
cut into the handle.

This discovery renewed, in some degree, the public excitement of a
few months before. The earth near the spot where the spade was found was tenderly examined, and the result was the finding of the dead remains of a gentleman.

It had been buried under two or three feet of soil and the spot covered with a layer of dead leaves and twigs.
There was but little decomposition, a fact attributed to some preservative property in the mineral-bearing soil.

Above the left eyebrow was a cut–a deep gash from which blood had flowed, covering the whole left side of the face and neck and
saturating the light-gray shirt. The skull had been cut throughout by the blow. The body was that of Charles May.

But what was it that passed through Mr. Odell’s store at Nolan?

It is universally true that light is a form of energy which is radiated by charged particles in constant motion, which are visible to the naked eye. What is more interesting is that light acts as both a particle and as a wave. The action of electrons is a source of most light emissions. Since the 19th century electrical lights have been used as a versatile lighting source. They may be used during the night and for additional lighting during the day as well. These lights are powered by electric grids and are supported by generator backups in case of power failure. Not surprisingly but lights nowadays are used for various purposes : for signaling and lighting, for curing and indicating, and of course for entertainment.

Indeed, among the variety of lights, such as LED lights, mercury vapor lamps , etc., disco lights occupy a special place. Generally, disco lights are found at pubs and discotheques all over the world. They are party lights and could be used both during day and night as most clubs are indoors or underground and rarely see the face of the sun. Because of this, whether night or day, disco lights are lit at all operational hours. Beyond doubt the use of them in a disco bar or club actually opens up a world of possibilities in lighting design, changing the way we think about not only lights, but light itself.

However, disco lights are quite different from common light bulbs or tubes that are used at home and offices. This is because these lights are designed and intended to create a particular and conducive atmosphere at party places. For this reason, disco lights are as a rule very dim and available in multiple colors. A great number if disco lights are available as independent bulbs or in the form of rope lights. The most beautiful effects are achieved because these lights operate in succession and offer a blinking sequence. Besides, disco lights are available in yellow, red, green, pink, blue, and orange shades .

Finally, apart from the smaller lights, they are also available in larger shaped bulbs that are reflected upon rotating crystal balls to create a twinkling effect. These lights are often attached to rotational motor devices, which permit disco lights to shine upon different people and corners to keep in tune with upbeat disco rhythms. Now along with being placed at an elevation, these lights are often installed along the dance floor, at the pedestal next to the bar, and around bar stool legs. This is important in order to maintain dance themes and continuity.

In fact, disco lights are comfortably available at local electric stores and online shops. Those lighting systems offer endless possibilities to modify your club life .
